On May 30, the Supreme Court, while addressing a petition opposing the decision to conduct NEET PG in two shifts, directed the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) to organize the exam in a single shift.
The NEET PG 2025, the national exam for admission to postgraduate medical courses, will now be conducted in a single shift on August 3. This decision follows the Supreme Court’s approval of the National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences’ (NBEMS) request to reschedule the exam, which was initially planned for two shifts on June 15.
A bench comprising Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and A G Masih granted NBEMS an extension to hold the exam by August 3, 2025. Earlier, on May 30, the Supreme Court had directed NBEMS to conduct the test in one shift after hearing a petition opposing the two-shift plan.
The court dismissed NBEMS’s claim of insufficient centres to accommodate all candidates in a single shift, stating, “Considering technological advancements in the country, we cannot accept that there are not enough centres to conduct the exam in one shift.”
Following this, NBEMS applied for more time to prepare. During the hearing, Justice Mishra questioned the need for an extension until August 3, while Justice Masih criticized the delay, asking why two months were necessary given the May 30 order.
The court allowed NBEMS to request additional time, after which NBEMS submitted a letter from Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) stating that August 3 was the only feasible date for conducting the test. The Centre’s counsel, Additional Solicitor General K M Nataraj, confirmed that the date was chosen after several high-level consultations.
Last year, NEET-PG was held in two shifts for the first time, on August 11, with morning and evening sessions from 9 am to 12:30 pm and 3:30 pm to 7 pm respectively.
