Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. What are CPS and FCPS courses in India?

CPS stands for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Mumbai, which offers two-year postgraduate diploma programs in various medical specialities. FCPS refers to the Fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, a three-year postgraduate fellowship program considered comparable in duration to MD or MS courses. These qualifications are primarily recognized in states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and a few others, providing medical graduates with an alternative pathway for postgraduate training and specialization.

  1. Are CPS and FCPS courses the same as MD/MS?

CPS and FCPS qualifications are generally not regarded as equivalent to MD or MS degrees across India. In certain states, such as Maharashtra and Gujarat, a few FCPS programs may be treated on par with MD/MS for specific purposes like government service appointments or teaching eligibility. However, recognition differs by speciality and varies from state to state, so candidates must verify the status before admission.

  1. Is NEET PG required for CPS/FCPS admission in 2025?

Yes. From the 2023 admission session onwards, the National Medical Commission has made it compulsory to qualify in NEET PG for entry into all CPS and FCPS programs. The Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Maharashtra conducts centralized CPS/FCPS counselling.

  1. Which state recognizes CPS/FCPS qualifications?
