On June 6, 2025, the Madras High Court dismissed several writ petitions requesting a re-examination of the NEET-UG 2025, filed by candidates who cited power outages at their exam centres as the reason for their underperformance.
Justice C. Kumarappan ruled that the court must respect the National Testing Agency’s (NTA) assessment unless there is clear evidence of bad faith. He noted that the NTA, after conducting field inspections, concluded that the power disruptions did not significantly affect the candidates’ ability to take the exam.
“In this case, I find no malicious intent from the authorities. With nearly 22 lakh students having appeared nationwide, allowing a re-exam would unfairly disrupt the level playing field,” the judge stated.
The petitions were filed by candidates who sat for the exam in centres at Avadi, Kunrathur, and K.K. Nagar in Chennai. They argued that the outages hampered their ability to perform and demanded a fresh exam for affected students.
However, Additional Solicitor General AR.L. Sundaresan informed the court that the NTA had undertaken a thorough and scientific evaluation, which revealed no adverse effects from the outage. He further pointed out that the exam occurred during daylight hours, and the answering pattern of the petitioners was well above the district average, suggesting their performance was not hindered.
Previously, during the court’s summer vacation, an interim order had stayed the release of NEET-UG 2025 results pending inquiry. With the main petitions now dismissed, the interim order has also been lifted, clearing the way for the NTA to announce the results.
