The Assam government under Chief Minister B.P. Chaliha decided to establish a second medical college in 1959. Following expert recommendations, Gauhati Medical College began operations on September 20, 1960, at Jalukbari, before moving to its current campus at Narakasur Hills in 1968. Over time, the hospital expanded its services, including the addition of the State Cancer Institute in 2017 and a fully functional Super Specialty Hospital in 2021. Recent developments include the establishment of annex hospitals like Dhiren Para and Pandu FRU in 2022, along with a 300-bed Cardio-Neuro Center housing departments for Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurology, and Neurosurgery.
